This spine fossil of a sea snake, dating back 55 million years, is from the genus Palaeophis, meaning 'ancient snake'. Due to fossil rarity, our knowledge of ancient sea snakes lags behind other Paleogene creatures. Discovered in Morocco, these snakes could reach 40 ft (12 m), dwarfing today's largest at 10 ft (3 m). Likely aquatic, their fossils are mainly found in marine strata. Venomous status is uncertain. Includes 2 vertebrae fossils, 0.250.5", displayed in an acrylic capsule.
