About this item: Angel Cerón is inspired by the concept of duality in Aztec spirituality and art for the design of this mask. "Existential duality between life and death is at the root of all conflict within oneself, and in relationship with others. We are born with both impulses, that of living and evolving, and that of dying," explains the Mexican artisan. Expert in pre-Hispanic art, Cerón crafts a ceramic mask in which the green side of the face symbolizes life, and the other represents a skull. An ornate headdress with serpents, an eagle and two suns underscore the divine theme of this mask. About our Artist: Angel Ceron comes from a family with generations of artisan experience. He learned the family ceramic techniques from his father, Antonio Ceron Orta, a renowned artisan. Angel began a long study of Mexico's pre-Hispanic cultures and learned the Nahuatl language spoken in ancient Mesoamerica. He uses clay from northern Oaxaca state, the only clay of this kind in Mexico and perhaps in the world. The unique characteristics of this yellow clay make it ideal for his work.
