The Mexican centavo coin was first minted in 1823, shortly after the independence of Mexico from Spain. The first centavo coins were made of copper and featured a design of a crowned eagle with a shield in its talons. The shield bore the image of an eagle perched on a cactus, with a serpent in its beak. This design was based on the coat of arms of the Aztec Empire. The centavo coin was originally worth 1/100 of a Mexican peso. However, the value of the peso fluctuated over the years, and the centavo coin became less and less valuable. In 1870, the centavo coin was made of bronze, and its value was increased to 1/50 of a peso. This made the centavo coin more useful, and it became more widely used. In 1970, the centavo coin was made of cupronickel, a more durable material. The cupronickel centavo coin is still in use today, and it is the smallest denomination of coin in Mexico.
