Large globe crafted from paper mache and gypsum, secured within a wooden basket: The spindles are adorned with continents (decoratively), the entire meridian is made of brass; the zodiac circle is decorated with astrological symbols. From the Renaissance onwards, grand globes were displayed in libraries and other cultural spaces, depicting the Earth as it was known then, and its counterpart, a celestial globe. Some globes of this size may have been converted into bars.
