A swift and agile marine creature, this California sea lion boasts dark brown fur and a streamlined body, often spotted resting in colonies, barking loudly, and huddling together. Frequently seen in harbors, on buoys, and along coasts from Vancouver Island to Japan, it belongs to the eared seal family (Otariidae), distinguished by external ear flaps, larger front flippers, a tail, and the ability to 'walk' on land using all four flippers. Males are notably larger, heavier, and possess a sagittal crest. This model is cast from a large male. A sea lion's teeth, particularly the canines, can indicate its age due to changes in length, size, color, and dentine layers. Their incisors have a bicuspid shape, aiding in food capture. Though listed as 'Least Concern' by the IUCN, these animals are fully protected in the U.S. under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
