This engine evoked visions of an American coal shovel's underside. Its construction featured two main types: the 'Early Shovel', with a 1,200 cc displacement, kidney-shaped right engine case, timer on the camshaft housing, and generator in front of the crankcase; and the 'Late Shovel', introduced in 1969/70, with a 1,207 cc displacement and the generator positioned behind the prime mover.
