This twin-engine, supersonic, variable-sweep-wing aircraft, crewed by a Pilot and Radar Intercept Officer, was exclusively operated by the US Navy and Iran Air Force. The Tomcat's name likely stems from Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly's call-sign, following the USN's feline-naming tradition. In 1990, VF-84 deployed on USS Theodore Roosevelt for Operation Desert Shield/Storm, flying 468 combat sorties.
