On June 24, 2002, the Israeli Ministry of Defense unveiled the new Merkava MK IV main battle tank. Production began in 2001, with plans to have it in service with the Israel Defense Forces by 2004. The Ministry aimed to produce between 50 to 70 tanks annually, with estimates suggesting up to 400 could be made. The Merkava MK IV boasts enhanced armor, gun systems, and electronics, making it slightly larger than its predecessor, the Merkava III Baz. While the Merkava II is available for export, the Merkava IV's systems and components are exported instead. This tank can carry eight infantry soldiers, a Command Group, or three litter patients, along with its crew of four. It can fire on the move, targeting both stationary and moving targets, and has proven effective against attack helicopters.
