The 36th Masters Tournament, held from April 6 to 9, saw Nicklaus lead wire-to-wire, opening with a 68 and winning his fourth of six Masters titles, three strokes ahead of the runners-up. This victory was Nicklaus' tenth of 18 professional titles, following his wins at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, and a runner-up finish at the British Open. Notably, this Masters was the first without its founder, Clifford Roberts, who passed away in December 1971, and it also marked the debut of twenty-year-old Bruce Crampton.
