Tamara Castello grew up in the Santa Clara Valley, California, once known as the "Valley of the Heart's Delight." She grew up right in the heart of Willow Glen surrounded by many Italian Americans. Willow Glen, a suburb of San Jose is an area with rich soil and the weather was very similar to the mild Mediterranean climate in Sicily, Italy. That was what attracted her Sicilian ancestors to come to America and live the "American Dream." The beauty of white blossoms on the fruit trees and the smell of the fresh fruit drying also attracted more Italians to come to Santa Clara Valley. The population in 1950 was 95,280 people. She was born in 1957. The next census was in 1960 with a population of 204,196 people, which more than doubled. Now San Jose has reached one million people in population surrounded by beautiful mountains in a lush valley. It was all about the perfect climate in San Jose. While she was growing up in the 1960s, San Jose was known as an agricultural town with an abundance of fruit and nut orchards. The silicon computer chip was invented there; thus, the name "Silicon Valley" is what they call it today. With all the fruit and nut orchards gone, it is now home to the high-tech industries. The memories of growing up in what is now the Silicon Valley is what inspired Tamara to write her memoir. She moved out of the valley to retire in the California desert. Read more
