This book is the first of its kind on two fronts; 1) it is the first cookbook specific to the Balsam of Peru allergy, and 2) it is a book that is part story, part interactive journal, part recipes. With permission, the book is formatted in Sharon Bowman's 4Cs from Training from the Back of the Room. The 4Cs are Connection, Concepts, Concrete Practice, and Conclusions. Each recipe will connect the reader to the recipe and invite them to call on a memory of a similar food. Concepts are always reading the recipe and gathering what is needed to make it. Concrete Practice is the making of the recipe, along with any substitutions needed based on cross contaminant allergies. Conclusions are a series of questions for journal responses about the recipe and any future modifications. The book begins with an introduction of how best to use the book to make the most of it. Helpful charts are inside, including a list of cross contaminant allergens such as Eugenol, Ferulic Acid, Coniferins, and the other cross allergens, or what Karen refers to as "uninvited guests." The book is written with compassion, humor, and Karen's own story. The idea of the book is that when the journal bits are completed, it will serve not only as the family cookbook noting favorites and what substitutions are needed, but will also serve as a journal of the story that is yours to share with your family.
