Dating back from early times when two people fell in love (or had an arranged marriage) there were many traditions that had to be adhered. The groom would have to be paid a “dowry” to marry the bride, or sometimes have to pay for the right to marry the bride. The bride would have to shed almost all ties with her family and enter into her husband’s family. Plus, there would be sacrifices, tribute, things that were blue, borrowed, stolen, and sometimes broken. Throughout the centuries all of these traditions have phased in and out of common practice. But one tradition remains: The combining of each family’s recipes!With every generation that gets married, the family cookbook gets thicker and thicker. Every married couple, at one time or another, talks about “How mom use to make it” or “When I was a kid we used to eat…” Passing down these recipes is more important than passing down some family’s heirlooms.
