St. Thomas Dragway opened in May of 1962 and quickly became a landmark drag racing facility in Canada. It was the first purpose-built drag strip constructed in Canada, and the first strip outside the United States to be fully sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association. In 1963, the track was awarded a coveted NHRA regional points meet, the first such event ever held outside the United States.
