Muskingum County is located in east-central Ohio and covers an area of 663 square miles. The county falls entirely within the Muskingum River drainage basin. The great Hopewell Earthwork Complex at Newark is only eleven miles from the western border of Muskingum County, and the famous Flint Ridge quarries extend for more than two miles into the county. Beginning in 1963 and continuing for the next six decades, the authors have attempted to record all of the known prehistoric Indian burial mounds, ceremonial earthen enclosures, and earth-walled fortifications that once could be found in the county. As of the end of 2023, a total of 199 mounds, 21 ceremonial enclosures, and five fortifications have been recorded. All of these sites are discussed in this publication, and photographs of many of the sites are reproduced. These include the mound photographs taken in 1917 and 1918 by Zanesville Harley-Davidson salesman, amateur naturalist, and artifact collector the late Clark Sturtz, as well as more recent photos taken by the authors and others. Artifacts found in a number of these mounds are also illustrated, and in some instances photos of artifacts found on nearby habitation sites are also included to help determine the possible age of some of the mounds. This book is over 500 pages with 150 site photos, 125 artifact photos, and over 150 maps pinpointing the locations of the various mounds and earthworks. Read more
