This volume presents a modern English translation of one of Esoteric Buddhism's most profound and foundational scriptures: the Mahāvairocana Abhisaṃbodhi Vikurvita Adhiṣṭhāna Sūtra, commonly known in East Asia as the Dainichikyō (Great Sun Sutra). This translation, undertaken in the spirit of our current era, aims to unlock the timeless wisdom contained within this ancient text for contemporary readers. The Essence of the Mahāvairocana SūtraThe Mahāvairocana Sūtra unfolds as a discourse delivered by the Cosmic Buddha Mahāvairocana—the Great Sun Buddha, who embodies the ultimate truth of the universe itself—to his primary interlocutor, the Bodhisattva Vajrasattva. At its heart lies a message of immense scope and profound hope: that all sentient beings, including ourselves, inherently possess a luminous Buddha-nature identical to that of Mahāvairocana. It proclaims the radical possibility of attaining Buddhahood within this very body, in this very lifetime (sokushin jōbutsu). This scripture provides the essential theoretical foundation for the unique practices of Esoteric Buddhism, particularly the practice of the Three Mysteries (sanmitsu kaji)—the integration of body (mudra), speech (mantra), and mind (samādhi/visualization) to achieve union with the Buddha.Formation, History, and TranslationWhile various theories exist regarding the precise time and place of its composition, the original Sanskrit version of the Mahāvairocana Sūtra is generally thought to have been compiled in India around the 7th century CE. Unfortunately, the author of this seminal work remains unknown. This profound teaching journeyed to China during the Tang Dynasty. The Indian monk, Tripiṭaka Master Śubhakarasiṃha (known in Chinese as Shanwuwei Sanzang), overcoming numerous hardships, carried the scripture to the capital, Chang'an, arriving in 716 CE. With the invaluable assistance of his learned disciple, the Chan Master Yixing, the text was translated into Classical Chinese in 724 CE (the 12th year of the Kaiyuan era). This version, imbued with Śubhakarasiṃha's exceptional scholarship and deep spiritual experience, became the primary form through which the Sutra has been studied and transmitted in East Asia ever since, exerting a decisive influence on the development of Esoteric Buddhism.Centuries later, the young Kūkai (posthumously known as Kōbō Daishi), traveling to Tang China as part of an imperial embassy, received the innermost secrets of Esoteric Buddhism from Master Huiguo. Among the many scriptures and ritual implements Kūkai brought back to Japan was the Mahāvairocana Sūtra. Upon his return, Kūkai established the Shingon school of Buddhism, designating this scripture as one of its fundamental pillars. Thus, the Dainichikyō became a cornerstone of Japanese Esoteric thought and culture—a true treasury of wisdom. However, the Classical Chinese translation rendered by Śubhakarasiṃha and Yixing, while venerable, presents significant challenges for readers today, nearly thirteen hundred years later. Its profound philosophical concepts, specialized Buddhist terminology, and uniquely Esoteric symbolic expressions are exceedingly difficult to penetrate without expert knowledge and commentary. It is a great loss when such universal wisdom remains inaccessible to many due to linguistic barriers.Reading the Mahāvairocana Sūtra in Our TimeIt is with the strong desire to make these magnificent teachings more accessible, understandable, and applicable to our lives in this new era that [Translator's Name/Relevant Pronoun] undertook this modern English translation. By presenting it now, the aim is not merely to offer a new version, but to express the hope that, in our rapidly changing and often uncertain modern world, the illuminating light of this ancient wisdom can brighten the inner path of each individual and become a beacon of hope for the future.
