This is not another book on the basics of fly-tying. If you’re a beginner, learn the basics first. The basics are the easy part. An instructor or video can visually teach you the basics. I want you to become a better fly-tier and designer. Even if you’re a more advanced tier, there are techniques and patterns that will be new to you. I would be happy to see anyone take my designs and add your own creative signature. Not just my designs, but anything you tie.I want to give you my perspective on fly-tying and design. I want you to think about the pattern and what you’re trying to accomplish. The hardest part of designing your own pattern is letting you imagination control the process. Follow your imagination and experiment with any idea you have. Even a bad idea can spark a new and better idea.I write about a friend of mine by saying, “Confidence is the key to success; frustration is the start of failure.” I want to help you build the confidence you need. Don’t let frustration lead you down the road to quitting. Fly-tying is a form of art and you are the artist. Just remember that the fish is the critic.
