The aircraft was larger, more powerful, and faster than its predecessor, the Nieuport 11, while retaining excellent maneuverability and climb rates. It quickly became the primary fighter for Allied pilots.In late 1916 and early 1917, the Nieuport 17 dominated the front lines. However, the rapid development of military technology quickly changed the situation.
