Have you ever paused to listen to the symphony of nature? In our busy lives, it's easy to overlook the vibrant ecosystems just outside our doors. In this book, I invite you to explore the common bird species that inhabit Monterey County, California, an area rich in diverse habitats. My name is Zhennong (Leo) Li, a student in the Stevenson School class of 2025. This book focuses on 117 of the most observed species, showcasing them through the lens of my camera.I vividly remember a cold winter day in London, Ontario, Canada, in 2020, when I was walking slowly along a path near a creek. The afternoon sun glistened on the shallow snow, casting twinkles of silver light across the ground. Through the yellow branches, I noticed a group of Common Goldeneyes, a species of small duck, swimming in the creek. They dove into the freezing water for food and soared gracefully into the sky. For me, their golden eyes and dark green heads reflected a sense of effortless freedom. To observe them more closely, I picked up a camera and embarked on a new journey of exploration. Capturing these moments made me realize that these birds were not just isolated creatures but vital parts of a broader ecosystem. In 2021, I began 9th grade at Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, and my curiosity about bird species only deepened. The variety of habitats in the Stevenson community has allowed me to observe over 140 species of birds over the past three years. I photographed most of them, discovering that many small birds, which might appear ordinary to the naked eye, reveal extraordinary delicacy and magic when viewed through a camera lens.Every bird and landscape photograph in this book has been taken by me. Each section also provides detailed descriptions that capture the essence of these birds. You will also find insights into their behaviors, habitats, and roles within the local ecosystem. By sharing these observations and photographs, I hope to foster a deeper appreciation for the avian life that thrives in Monterey County. Read more
