William Morris was a British writer and poet often regarded as one of the founders of modern fantasy literature. He crafted richly imagined, medieval-inspired worlds filled with quests, magic, and romance, shaping the genre’s tone and style and influencing later authors, especially J.R.R. Tolkien, with his immersive storytelling and archaic prose style.Volume 1 gathers William Morris’s short fiction, originally published in The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine throughout the year of 1856 and “A King’s Lesson” another short story that was published in The Commonweal between 1886 and 1887. The early novella, A Dream of John Ball, was published in 1888. The House of the Wolfings and The Roots of the Mountains were both published in 1889 and are arguably the forerunners of modern fantasy as we know it. Lastly, the socialist novel News from Nowhere was published in 1890.Contains:Nine short storiesA Dream of John BallThe House of the WolfingsThe Roots of the MountainsNews from Nowhere Read more
