Big Two Hearted Mountain is a trilogy. The first novel in the trilogy is entitle A Portrait of the Young Artist, Jack Workman. A Portrait of the Young Artist, Jack Workman is the story of a young man by the name of Jack Workman who is about to leave home for the first time to attend college and who takes time out to reflect back over his life growing up on his father's small goat dairy in the middle of California's Great Central Valley. Jack was born on July 1, 1947, in Bethesda Hospital, in the city of Crookston, Minnesota amongst poverty and ignorance, the fourth son out of five children (a member of what has been dubbed the “Babyboom Generation” in a country full of power, wealth, and affluence during what has become known as The Cold War Era of American politics when America was at the height of her political, economic, and military might in a world torn between two superpowers bent on nuclear self-destruction. Jack grew up the son of a small, dairy farmer, carpenter, and Jack-of-all-tradest. Big Two Hearted Mountain is the basic story of a young country farm boy who was about to leave home for the first time to attend college just prior to one of the most tumultuous events to occur in this country since the end of World War II - namely the Vietnam War II and all that went with it - and who takes time out to reflect back over his life growing up on his father's goat dairy and horse ranch in the middle of California's Great Central Valley during the 1950's and 1960's.Big Two Hearted Mountain begins in the form of a vignette. The vignette was designed to be the opening scene in a much larger work of art.The vignette describes the first time Jack went deer hunting with his father. Jack was seven years old at the time. The Workmans moved to the State of Washington in the summer of 1950 where they bought a new home close to Mount St. Helens to start a new life just as the Korean War began. Three years later, in the summer of 1953, Jack's mother was killed in a car accident and his father attempts suicide. When Jack see the dead deer his father shoots the memory of his dead mother comes back to him and frightens Jack and his father reminds him life is a Big Two Hearted Mountain. Read more
