Inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields" they were first adopted by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war (1914–1918). Today have become a familiar tradition in almost every American community. The distribution of the bright red memorial flower to the public is one of the oldest and most widely recognized programs of the American Legion Auxiliary during Veterans Day.
