Usually it is a steel bar or rod that runs inside the neck, beneath the fingerboard.A truss rod keeps the neck straight by countering the pull of the strings and natural tendencies in the wood. When the truss rod is loosened, the neck bends slightly in response to the tension of the strings. Similarly, when tightened, the truss rod straightens the neck by resisting string tension.If you hear buzzing, or if the fret fails to sound a note, then your guitar neck has bowed upward toward the strings. This means that you need to loosen the truss rod. Grab yourself the appropriate Allen key and give it a turn to the left.Truss rods can break if too much tension is placed on an already maxed out truss rod so caution is warranted. The truss rod is as tight as it will go and the neck still has way too much relief in it.Loosening a truss rod (turning counter-clockwise) adds relief to (decreases tension on) the neck which results in increased (higher) string action height. . This reduces relief, lowering the string action (height of the strings over the frets).
