Some legends of the Hawaiian surfing world include Duke Kahanamoku and Eddie Aikau.

[Duke Kahanamoku]
Born in 1890 on Oahu, Hawaii, he is known as the father of modern surfing.
He won a gold medal in the 1912 Olympic freestyle swimming, becoming the first person from Hawaii to do so.
He helped spread surfing worldwide, demonstrating it at various beaches.
A bronze statue of him carrying a surfboard has been erected.

[Eddie Aikau]
Born in 1946 in Maui, Hawaii, he was also a lifeguard.
He was named Lifeguard of the Year in 1971.
He won the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship in 1977.

Surfing is believed to have been started around 400 AD by ancient Polynesians living in Hawaii and Tahiti.
Later, in the 20th century, it was introduced to the mainland United States and quickly gained popularity, especially in California.
