Among the long history of the "501," the model manufactured during World War II from 1942 to 1946 is also known as the "WWII (World War II) model." Due to material controls in the United States during World War II, jeans were no exception, and various specifications were simplified. Among them, the laurel wreath-engraved buttons and plain donut-shaped buttons, the fly front with fewer buttons than usual, and the pocket linings made of military herringbone twill or checked shirt fabric are unique details only seen at that time, and there are many diverse types without uniformity. To indicate that they were different from regular products, Levi's added the symbol "S" for "Simplified" to the beginning of the product number, and this continued until 1946.
