Asahi Pentax Super-Takumar 50mm F1.4 early model with 8 elements. It has an M42 screw mount.
Released in 1965. Achieving a 50mm F1.4 in this generation was technically challenging and resulted in distinctive characteristics from each manufacturer. Particularly, this Super-Takumar has the ability to capture some kind of light that you don't remember photographing, overflowing in the background, allowing for a fantastical photography experience. Especially the prominent flares, which are familiar, create a world that envelops everything when you take photos against the light towards the setting sun. Bokeh is slightly bubbly, emphasizing the outlines. It is highly recommended for those trying out an old lens for the first time.
The original Super-Takumar lens series adopted a luxurious 8-element structure for the 50mm F1.4. However, most of the lenses available in the market today are a later model with a simplified 7-element structure. Also, the later models mostly use Atom Glass that yellows over time, resulting in discoloration. Due to this, the early 8-element models are popular for their rendering and rarity, often commanding high prices.
We have prepared some sample shots taken with this lens.
Took it to Disneyland. In places with characteristic dim lighting, a compact and bright lens is ideal. The softness at wide aperture is good, but stopping down the lens, the pan-focus is particularly good, making it sufficiently usable in scenarios where you take many such landscape shots.
The condition has almost eliminated any fungus clouding through disassembly cleaning. Since the rear element of the 8-element construction protrudes, there are some minor scratches, but the rendering is good even when stopped down based on test shots. The focus ring, while common, still has some stiffness. There is no looseness that might make it fall off easily, but for those who are cautious, it can be a downside. Despite this, the lens is recommended.
